Cooking Up a Gift Idea

I’m going to go ahead and declare it: What you are about to read is the best gift idea for the person who has everything. And by “person,” I mean your mother.

I’m talking about the family cookbook. Yes, I know family cookbooks have been around for years – I have my own grease-splattered, worn-out, handwritten collection of favorites from my great aunt. But we can make it really easy on you. Seriously.

First, ask everyone in your family to email you with their favorite family recipes along with their favorite memories associated with each dish. Whether it is the Cajun roux your grandmother can make only while listening to Jazz music, or the corn casserole your Aunt Nancy messes up every Thanksgiving, each family dish is sure to have its own story.

After you’ve collected all of the recipes and memories, merge them into one document. Feel free to insert pictures of family members at past holidays to liven up the pages.

Once you have them in one document, go to FedEx Office Print Online and upload the file. From there, you can select a cover and binding. You can even add tabs (fancy!) to separate the recipes by category. After you’ve proofed it online, you can have them shipped to you or pick them up at your nearest location. It will look like you spent hours hunched over a binding machine, and everyone will be impressed with how thoughtful and talented you are.

But here is the best part: when your cousin James marries that five star chef next year, you can pull the file from your desktop, add her recipes, and do a second edition for the entire family. It’s a recipe for successful gift-giving for years to come!

Love this idea

I love this idea, especially for myself HEHE!  i have so many recipes ripped from here, written on there, cut from boxes etc and it would be awesome to get them organized and in one single place!  thanks for the tip.  any idea on approximate price?

Cost of Cookbook

I'm so glad you like the idea! The cost varies depending on how many pages you have, what type of binding you select, the type of paper you select, etc.  The standard package (which includes black coil binding, clear plastic cover, vinyl back, color printing) starts at approximately $7 per piece.

What an awesome idea . . .

What an awesome idea . . . and not just for the holidays!  This would be a great gift for someone going on to college, buying their first home, or getting married.  How fun!  I might just email my family and have them send recipes so I can make one for myself.  :)

Oh my gosh! What an awesome

Oh my gosh! What an awesome idea! I was looking for something to do for family after trying "gifts in a jar" last year...This looks like just the thing to try next year! In the meantime, I know some ladies who would love one for their birthday! Thanks for the awesome idea!

This is a terrific idea!

This is a terrific idea!  We wished we had written down some of my Grandma's specialities - and, now that she's no longer with us, it's taken much time in experimentation and STILL doesn't taste like her cooking. :)

Very cute idea =)
