I Get by with a Little Help from My Friends
Not too long ago, I finished my first marathon. It was quite an effort but it was rewarding. Now, I am wondering what to do next – another marathon, an Olympic triathlon or something completely different? No matter what, I will keep running. And if you are thinking a marathon is too daunting, a fun way to compete is the marathon relay.
In a marathon relay, you and three to four of your friends each take part of the marathon and only run a section of it. I did one last December with my sister and three of my friends and it was great. Runningrelays.com is great website that even has Random Team Name Generator that helped us figure out our own team name – the Questionable Motley Crew. It also has lots of tips and tricks for running relays of all lengths. If I can find a team, I’ve even been considering running the “Capital 2 Coast” relay that goes from Austin to Corpus Christi, Texas.
Once you’ve got your team together, think about getting team shirts. The ones we had made were technical fabric and were rather inexpensive. You can find lots of sites on the web where you can get custom running shirts. I would recommend you get your name printed on them. It really makes it inspiring to have people calling your name and cheering you on as you run, whether you know them or not.
If you do have a cheering section (like my co-worker Kim always does) posters and signs are great way to help motivate a runner along the way. For the cheering section I suggest at least two signs, one for your runner and a more generic one for all the other runners out there. They need motivation too! Having your signs created professionally and printed will make them easier to see. As a runner I definitely appreciate your support, but sometimes trying to squint and figure out what a hand-written sign says can be distracting! So think about getting a simple and inexpensive sign or banner printed up and you will be sure to show-up the rest of the crowd on Race Day.
