Interview Tips Round-Up

Very few people actually enjoy interviews. I’ve been on both sides -- as the interviewee and the interviewer – and I know it’s difficult. So, I decided to share some helpful interview tips I’ve picked up over the years, and a few places I’ve found online that may help you get ready for your next interview.

First – be confident. Remind yourself that there’s a reason you’re going to this interview, and it’s because you are the right person for the job (whatever that job may be!). Confidence always shines through and can sometimes be a make or break factor when it comes time to make a selection. If you don’t believe in the product you’re selling – yourself – why will the company? Here are a few other helpful hints from some of the experts online:

  • Always plan ahead. TheLife, Money & Development blog has a great post about interview tips. One of the most helpful tips for me is to prepare for the unexpected. For example, have enough copies of your resume handy, just in case you meet with multiple people from a team or department.

  • Don’t forget to do your homework. The Simply Lisa blog reminds readers that hiring managers want to hear your motivation for wanting the position. Researching the company helps you learn more about the opportunity and will help you address why you’re a great fit. Read more of Lisa’s tips here.

  • Come prepared with questions. Self-proclaimed gen-Y career and workplace expert Lindsey Pollak’s blog has a helpful post chock-full of interview tips. One of her recommendations is to plan questions for the interviewer ahead of time so you can demonstrate your level of interest in the position.

I hope these tips come in handy for you. Let me know what you think or share suggestions that have worked for you in the comments section. And good luck to everyone out there with interviews on the horizon!

Interview Ideas

I, too, have been on both sides of the interview desk.  There has been so much written - especially in today's economic climate - about how to "ace" an interview and get that job offer that I felt I needed to respond to some of the advice.  The best way to behave is just like yourself - your best self, of course, polite and alert and responsive - but it is never a good idea to try to pretend to be someone that you are not.   A job is sort of like a mini-marriage, and in the same way, pretense will only come back to bite you somewhere!
