Making a Good Presentation

 

You may have seen our new FedEx Office TV spot where a business guy asks his colleagues “who is our best presentation guy?” and someone calls out “Carl!” Carl then turns out to be a whiz at CREATING presentations, but not the best at GIVING presentations, as the audience finds out. It’s a funny TV ad, and it also demonstrates how difficult presentations can be sometimes. 

We see a lot of presentation documents printed in our centers, and we’ve gathered some tips for how to put your best foot forward with your printed presentations.

  1. Use a white background. On the screen, a colored background may look nice, but in print, a white background is the way to go for clarity and ease of reading.
  2. If using Microsoft PowerPoint, keep the wording limited on each slide. Nobody wants to see a page full of text, especially on a slide presentation. You can usually make your point stronger in fewer words.
  3. Use pictures. Charts, graphs and images add color and variety to the design and often illustrate your point better than words.
  4. Number your pages. Many people forget to do this, but it’s critical when referring your readers to a certain section or key point.
  5. Bind it, don’t staple it. If you want to make the best impression, coil binding looks professional, helps the pages turn easily and is relatively inexpensive and easy to do.
 
Of course, getting the content pulled together is the hardest part of a presentation, but remember that the WAY the content is presented is sometimes just as important as WHAT is being presented. Just ask Carl.
