Recipe for Success: Family Card Recipe Box

My family has some of the best cooks. Ever. So, given this, you’d think that I’d want to preserve our top recipes so that I could prepare them in my own kitchen one day. And yet, right now they are all a jumbled mess of scraps of paper, notes written on napkins. They’re not only unusable like this, but they’re in no way preserving our family history of amazing cooks!

Several years ago, grandmother took the time to organize some of her favorites into a book and shared it with me and my three cousins. It’s in a tiny little binder and was a wonderful gift, but sadly doesn’t allow for updating with new favorites or additions from other family members.

So I came up with a solution using recipe card boxes readily available at any craft or home goods store and the recipe cards are both easy to make and personalized.

Here’s how I did mine:

1)       Figure out what size cards your recipe card box will hold. Some are 4” x 6” while others hold 5” x 7” cards.

2)       Create with a card design idea, keeping in mind you need lots of space to write or type your recipes. I wanted to use an image of a cake, but I also considered a more generic image of kitchen utensils.

3)       Get to designing! I used the FedEx Office Design & Print Center to make mine to keep things easy (they have templates that are the correct size, and it makes the design work simple) but you can also design your own using a Microsoft Word-type program and some clip art.

4)       From Design & Print Center I chose a flat note card and then picked from the prepared designs, but you could upload your own layout if you’re gifted with graphic design. For recipe cards, I discovered that selecting templates from the Food and Beverage category was helpful.

5)       I customized my card with my personal information and send them off to print! They arrived in 5-7 days, and it was less that $30 to make 20. I consider this a bargain because they are adorable and it would have cost me far more in time and dollars to make some with scrapbooking paper and all the other trimmings.

Now I have a great little box of family recipes sitting on my kitchen counter, organized and ready whenever I have the urge to cook!

Here’s a twist to consider: Compile some of your favorite recipes on these cards and give them as a housewarming gift to new neighbors, friends who just got married or a couple who moved into their first home together.
