A Coupon Worth More than Just Cents Off

When you’re thinking about what to give for Valentine’s Day, you may be tired of the same old gift ideas — chocolates, roses, jewelry, etc. This year, consider a handmade gift for the people you love, because they always seem to be the ones that are treasured long after the holiday has passed.

An easy-to-make gift is a booklet of love coupons. The coupons themselves can be for anything – cooking a meal, doing a chore or errand for your loved one, or just a fun activity. And because it’s totally customizable you can do this for absolutely anyone – a significant other or friend, kids, parents, and more. Think of it as giving the gift of time.

Here’s a picture of the booklet I created last weekend for my fiancé. My booklet included five coupons printed on cardstock, which cost around $7.

I’m so happy with how they turned out!

There are lots of ways to design your coupons – you could make them look like an actual coupon with a fake barcode, design them to look like a ticket to the movies or a sporting event, or create heart-shaped ones like mine.

I did it in 5 easy steps:

  1. Use Microsoft Word to create a document with large heart shapes, then insert the text you’ve chosen for each coupon.
  2. Get the hearts printed on paper or cardstock, which is sturdier and more attractive.
  3. Cut out the shapes.
  4. Punch holes in the top or on the side.
  5. Thread through some colored yarn or ribbon to hold the coupons together into a booklet and tie it up.

Here are some suggestions for coupons:

For children –

  • An extra bedtime story
  • 30 extra minutes of a favorite show
  • A free pass on one of their chores

For your significant other –

  • A car wash
  • Breakfast in bed
  • A home improvement project

For friends –

  • A couple hours of babysitting
  • A free carpool day
  • A free lunch outing
