Create and Laminate a Chore Chart to Teach Young Kids Responsibility

My son is four years old and currently my husband and I are trying to teach him responsibility. We want him to learn the value of being rewarded for hard work and to take pride in his accomplishments. He heard the word "chore" for the first time a couple of weeks ago, but it has been difficult for him to truly understand what we are trying to teach him. Since time management can be a difficult concept (even for adults!)  I created a chart with daily and weekly activities so he can see what needs to be done around the house and we can track his progress daily. At this point, the actual tasks are limited but I can easily modify this as he grows, even into a teenager! (With slight alterations this can also work for the entire family.)

Here are the simple steps I took to create my chart:

1.)  Design your chart. I used a Microsoft Word template and then changed the color and layout to
suite my preferences. I have also seen parents use homemade charts made from brightly colored paper.

2.) Size your chart. Choose dimensions that are large enough to be readable and would fit well on the refrigerator. The software can sometimes be limiting so a FedEx Office® team member can help you achieve your desired size.

3.)  Bring your design file to any FedEx Office to be printed. Ask for heavy cardstock paper so it will be extra durable. You can also upload it through Print Online and pick it up at your local store when it's ready.

4.)  Have your chart laminated. FedEx Office offers dry erase lamination that will allow you to easily update the chart with dry erase markers.

5.)  Hang the chart on the refrigerator door (this is a highly-trafficked place in most homes) and work with your children on the valuable lesson of responsibility.

This is a simple and clear method help teach your children how to maintain their responsibilities so they feel involved and proud of their achievements. After the first week of consistently completing his chores, we rewarded our son with a trip to an ice cream store for a special treat! Remember, hard work pays off. Make sure to praise and reward your children as they take on and successfully master these new tasks.
