Fabulous Fundraising à la Bake Sales

I love cookies. I love all kinds. They are my greatest vice. If you want some of my money, offer to sell me a cookie. Now not to toot my own horn, but I am pretty good baker myself. People seem to love my baked goods, especially my rice cereal treats — which you bakers out there know aren’t really baked. They are quite easy to make and are always crowd pleasers, so I often use my skills to help generate donations for charities I support.

Here are my tips for hosting a successful bake sale fundraiser:

  • Homemade is ideal – Selling bags of store-bought treats won’t do. If you can buy it out of a vending machine or at a local convenience store, you are less likely to tempt people with it.
  • Increase the yum factor – The more choices people have, the more likely they will find something they like. On top of that, patrons will likely buy more than one item. Think buffet – the more choices you have, the more you eat.
  • Spread the word – Create and pass out colorful flyers letting people know when and where the bake sale is. Also, send e-mails and text messages to friends and family. And for those of you into Facebook, considering posting a status update or event for your profile.
  • It’s all in the presentation – This is all about perceived quality and value. First, make the portion size a bit larger than normal and people will feel like they are getting more for their money. Next, use colored cling wrap or plastic bags and ribbon to individually package your goods. Finally, create custom description/price tags. Business card templates available in many publishing programs are a great starting place - and just the right size! - for these tags.
  • Mark up the price a bit – Don’t be afraid to charge a fair price. People know this is a fundraiser and don’t mind paying a premium when their money goes toward a cause. Even if the baked goods are donated, you still want to sell the goods above cost in order to raise more funds.

I hope this helps make your fundraiser a tasty success. I got hungry just thinking about it. And if you like my custom-made tag, here’s the template. Enjoy!

Just found out that out

Just found out that out church will be having a bake sale on July 2nd at a popular "farmer's market" on a busy highway.  It will be the perfect spot to make lots of money from all of those travelers stopping for fresh home-grown veggies on the way to their beach/picnic/party destinations.  We'll be able to entice their senses with the sights and smells of our yummy creations.  Thanks for the great tips - I'll read them again and again!

Yummy tips!

These are great tips.  You are right, it is the little details that will make your event a success.  It is great to have a reminder post like this.  I think this may be something I'll take and use for my MOPS group.  Thanks for sharing!

What a horrible thing to do, posting those tempting cookie photos! I like to make cookies with macademia AND walnuts as well as dark chocolate chips, everyone loves them. Now I'm hungry....gotta go, be back in 20 minutes! :-)

another bake sale fundraiser idea

We recently raised $1200 by having a bake sale silent auction with whole desserts.  We did it the Tuesday before Thanksgiving so people could buy desserts to serve at their holiday meal.  People love it!
