Fall into Fall with Your Kids!
It’s that time of the year again: the leaves are changing, the newness of back-to-school supplies has worn off and we need to start coaxing our kids into wearing heavier jackets. What better way to “fall” into autumn fun than by exploring the seasonal changes with the kids? Taking a refreshing nature walk through the autumn landscape in a nearby park or even around your own neighborhood can be both educational and a great way to get some fresh air – all while getting out some of that pent-up childhood energy!
To make the most of a beautiful fall afternoon, why not do some arts and crafts to help your child learn not just about nature but also the changing of the seasons?
- When I was growing up, I used to love collecting the colorful fall leaves. Preserving them, however, proved to be a difficult task. Everyone can relate to how kids want to treasure their findings for as long as possible, and making a leaf rubbing can do just that. A box of crayons and some paper is all your child needs for this craft: have them place their prized leaf on one side of the paper while they rub a crayon on the other. The pressure from the crayon on the leaf will create an imprint that will last long after the weather warms up again. Have some fun arranging leaves into special designs, sizes and colors or even transform the prints into various characters or objects. This project is easy enough for all ages and a nice way to make sure the memory of the nature walk never “leafs” you!
- Using the leaves you find to create your own book is another great way to learn about different trees. In three easy steps your child can make their own guide to the fall foliage. First, collect leaves from your backyard or from around the neighborhood. Then, work together to identify the tree leaves by paying close attention to their size and shapes. About.com offers basic images for leaf identification, and even has a leaf coloring book you can print out for your kids! Finally, after pasting the leaves on paper and writing in the names, bring your child’s work over to your local FedEx Officewhere the book can be bound and turned into a great keepsake.
- BrightHub.com offers more fun fall activities for pre-school aged children. In addition to your nature walk, these outdoor games range from searching for forest creatures to making a leaf maze in your own backyard.
Here’s to a season of you and your kids raking in some fall fun!
