Fun Funnels for Fancy Parties

Who wants to serve party-goers popcorn out of ordinary bowls? Or give out confetti at parties or weddings in those messy tissue-paper rolls tied at both ends with ribbon? While browsing at StyleMePretty, I recently ran across a novel idea for holding all sorts of goodies in a much more stylish way – funnels. Easy, do-it-yourself, decorative paper funnels or cones. The idea is so simple that it’s genius, and so charming that it’s hard to ignore.

You can stuff them with finger foods (think snack mix or tiny candies) or flavored popcorns and use them as a cute appetizer holder at picnics, barbeques, summer movie nights, family get-togethers, even weddings. The possibilities are endless!

If you also love this idea, here are the supplies you’ll need:

·         Heavy-weight paper (I used cardstock from FedEx Office – find locations here – for less than $3 for 15 sheets, but scrapbooking paper with a pretty print would work well too. If you go that route, look for paper with a color/pattern on both sides.)

·         Double-sided tape

·         Scissors, X-ACTO™ knife or paper cutter (You can use a paper cutter at your local FedEx Office, which is what I did.)

·         Stickers to hold the finished funnels together. I made mine at FedEx Office and had them printed out on vinyl paper. The paper has an adhesive backing that functions like a sticker. Making these stickers isn’t new to me; in fact, you’ll find some other labels/stickers that I made for summer canning here with a video. I provided a template for the ones I am using today.

Since the sticker is the “glue” that holds this crafty creation together, that’s where I’d recommend starting the project.

If you’re using my template for the stickers, then all you have to do is fill in your text (if you want any), then save as a PDF on a USB flash drive. If you’re starting from scratch with your own design or shape, then make sure you save the final version as a PDF since not all fonts translate well from computer to computer.

Next, take your design to your local FedEx Office and ask that your stickers be printed on vinyl. It’s adhesive on one side and works perfectly as a custom sticker. Like I’ve mentioned in other posts, you can pick almost any color imaginable, and you can adjust the size of the labels however you like.

Once you have all your supplies, get started on the funnels. StyleMePretty provides great instructions for how to make these funnels, but for your convenience, I have included a condensed version below. Note: In my experience, you need to be precise in your folding, because it’s hard to get creases out of the paper once they’re in. I suggest testing this out on a plain piece of paper first.

·         Step one: Cut the paper down to 6″ squares. Go larger if you want to hold food; this size is ideal for confetti.

·         Step two: Dog-ear the paper (like you would fold over the corner of a book to save a page) on one edge about 1″ inward. However, instead of just folding over the top corner have the fold run the entire length of the side of paper. The fold should be 1" over at the top and then go to a point at the bottom.

Like this:

·         Step three: Place double-sided tape along the folded edge.

·         Step four: Take the opposite corner from the folded edge bring them the two edges together. (then press down so the double-sided tape sticks)

·         Step five: Affix your sticker to help the double-sided tape hold the funnel together.

·         Step six: Fill and enjoy!

Let us know how you used this clever creation (confetti, food, something else?) and where (wedding, party, fancy Friday night with the family?). We love hearing about your creativity!
