Fundraising Series: Signs for Success

 In my last post, I talked about New Year’s resolutions and how to stay on track. Mine are off to a better start than I thought they’d be and I hope the same is true for all of our Out of Office readers. Some of you may have even resolved to spend more time giving back to your community. And so, in that spirit, we’ve designed a series with innovative ideas for fundraising. 


Spring is a busy time for fundraising and many organizations are making plans now for the coming months. Nonprofits earn a large portion of their budget from the season’s events and community groups become active again – holding bake sales, car washes and yard sales to support youth sports, summer trips and the like.  


To avoid being overlooked amid all this activity, use yard signs to attract participants and drive ticket sales and donations. Signs are highly visible, can be placed just about anywhere and are durable and reusable. Plus you can get creative with the design while promoting your event!

We came up with a couple of ideas to get you started: 

·         Start a sign-up blitz: Have a little fun with your planning committee while increasing participation in your fundraiser at the same time. Place a sign in a group member’s yard, and don’t allow them to move the sign until they’ve signed-up a certain number of people to participate in the fundraiser. Once they have, they can move the sign to another member’s home and the sign-up blitz continues! Work with your group ahead of time to set the number of sign-ups required and determine a prize for the person with the most sign-ups. 

·         Show your gratitude: Create “thank you” signs to recognize all-star donors and volunteers. Include a simple message and your organization’s logo; then tie on balloons to amp up the fun factor and place them in recipients’ yards as a surprise. In addition to making supporters feel appreciated, the signs will also raise awareness for your cause.

Fundraising help

I found an article to download on how to plan a fundraiser successfully called "Fundraising Made Easy" on the Treasured Scenes website, which seems to be a fundraising program built around collectibles.  I got the report for free, and was delighted that it was only 3 or 4 pages long in PDF format, and seems very on-point to help non-profits plan and manage fundraising from what I've read in it.  Hopefully it helps someone starting out fresh in fundraising.  Best of luck to all of us starting out in fundraising!
