Let’s Go Fly a Kite!
It has been really windy here in Dallas lately-- way more than usual. One good thing about a windy day is that it makes for excellent kite-flying weather. I have found different websites with tips for making kites and came up with my own template for a small kite that is pretty easy to put together and allows you to decorate it however you want.
Here are the supplies you’ll need and steps for assembly. (FYI, most of these items can be found at FedEx Office locations and some can be used free of charge in the self-service area.)
What You’ll Need:
- Kite template file
- 1 sheet of 8.5” x 11” sheet of cardstock, any color
- Markers, stickers, and/or colored pencils
- ¾” clear tape
- Scissors
- Hole puncher
- 10’ or more of string
- Colorful ribbon
- 1 thin wooden skewer or something similar, such as those used for kebabs
What To Do:
- Print out the kite template double-sided on the cardstock.
- Have the kids decorate it with the markers, stickers or colored pencils.
- Fold along the line marked “Fold 1” so the “Tape Here and Punch Hole” wording is facing out.
- Fold along the line marked “Fold 2 and Tape” and run a piece of tape along that fold.
- Tape the skewer along the “Tape Bamboo Skewer Here” line.
- On the other side of the kite, place a 2” piece of tape over the “Tape Here and Punch Hole” wording and punch a hole in the marked spot.
- Tape a piece of the ribbon at the end of the kite. You can make it as long or as short as you want, or even use a few strips in different colors.
- Finally, tie the string through the hole.
That’s it…easy as pie! This activity is fun and will keep kids entertained, plus now the kiddos have something else fun to do outdoors. If you have a great idea for a spring or summer project, send details via the “Talk to Us” button and your idea could be featured on the blog in the coming months.

Great idea!
Just wanted to say thanks for a great post. This looks like something fun to make with my kids.
Great idea!
My daughter hates to fly kites because she's always afraid it will blow away and get stuck in a tree (even though the trees are quite far away). This is a great way for us to make a "throw away" kite so if it gets stuck somewhere, she won't be as upset. She can just make another one.
Great twist on an old fave
I love this idea! We recently bought my daughter her first kite and kite flying has become our family's new favorite hobby. This project will be so exciting for her; she'll get to fly a kite exclusively designed by her - I think mom and dad will have theirs flying right alongside hers - how could we not?!

Cute idea. Am I crafty enough to make it work?
We suggested going kite flying and my daughter immediately wanted to make one. I had no idea how so we pulled out some they had received as gifts but never used. I know she'd love to make her own though. What a great idea for the summer. Hopefully someone as non-crafty as I am can even make this. :)
