Making Sweet Treats Sweeter This Valentine’s Day

Many of you probably know this quote from a famous movie: “Life is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get.” Well, yeah, you kinda do. You’re going to get a heart-shaped (usually) cardboard box that isn’t very fancy – or personal.

But it’s easy to change that and add a unique touch to what is an otherwise plain vanilla gift! Spice up those boring boxes of chocolate by creating a custom lid with a message and photo for your special someone – whether it’s a spouse, significant other, friend, parent or child.

To do this, simply design and print a new “cover” for the lid on cardstock, cut to fit the box, then adhere to the lid. Here’s how I did it in four easy steps:

·         First, buy the chocolates. It’s hard to design a custom lid when you don’t know how much space or which shape you’ll have to work with.

·         Second, design the lid. I plan to give mine to my husband (hope he isn’t reading!), so I chose a corny message that will probably make him squirm – “sweets for my sweet” – and got to work designing my message in a simple word processing program.

·         Third, have the lid printed. I used FedEx Office® Print Online to make it easier and because I didn’t have cardstock on hand. I chose a red cardstock paper (and trust me, there are plenty of color options), uploaded my file and picked it up later that afternoon.

·         Fourth, cut the cardstock to fit your lid. I used an X-Acto™ knife to get a crisp, precise cut. I added my own touch with the tissue paper border, kind of like a Victorian valentine. Then I just glued the cardstock to the top of the box and voila – a simple gift made more special!

You could also put a surprise message underneath the lid of the box, or replicate this idea on a cookie tin. However you chose to do it, hope you have a happy Valentine’s Day!
