Memorial Day Weekend Round-Up

This Memorial Day, when you’re enjoying your day off from work and perhaps grilling out or spending time with family, take a moment to remember the reason for the holiday. It’s a time to reflect on our country’s history and thank those who have served in the armed forces to protect our freedom and safety. Both of my grandfathers served in World War II (one fought in Iwo Jima and one was an airplane mechanic), so I am especially thankful on this holiday.

To help commemorate the occasion, consider sending a care package to a serviceman or woman serving overseas right now.

  • For tips on addressing and a list of mailing restrictions, visit the United States Postal Service site at  http://www.usps.com/supportingourtroops/. USPS locations even offer free flat-rate shipping boxes that you can use to send treats to active duty servicemen and women stationed overseas with an APO/FPO address.
  • If you don’t personally know someone in the armed services but would like to support the troops, visit anysolider.com. This program was created to provide care packages for soldiers who do not receive mail. As the site explains, “millions of men and women serving overseas never receive any mail [and] have to cope with the harsh conditions of serving overseas without signs of support from friends and family back home.” Sending a care package with the Any Soldier program is a great way to celebrate Memorial Day and show a serviceman or woman that you remember the sacrifice he or she is making.

Another way to honor current and former servicemen and women this Memorial Day is through the “Put a Face with a Name” program. The Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Fund (VVMF) launched this campaign in September 2009 in order to gather images of the more than 58,000 men and women whose names are inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. If you’re a family member or friend of a Vietnam War veteran, you can bring photos to your local FedEx Office, where a team member will scan the photo and upload it to a special website at no cost. All you need to do is complete a form about the service member. This program was slated to conclude on Memorial Day 2010, but FedEx Office recently decided to extend its work with the VVMF program through Independence Day weekend, ending July 6, 2010.

All images collected through that date will eventually displayed in The Education Center at The Wall. The Education Center is an underground facility that will be built near the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The pictures being collected will form its centerpiece: a larger-than-life wall of photos that will showcase pictures of those we lost during the Vietnam War on their birthdays.

So if you have a loved one who is honored on The Wall, stop by one of our centers with a photo this Memorial Day for scanning so that it can be included in this amazing program.

I am glad you appreciated the ideas.

I just spent Memorial day with both Grandmas and we talked about Grandpas.

I'm an Army Vet.

I was deployed so many times...and I really missed being in the states.  This will mean so much to any servicemember. Getting any type of package/mail will make their day.

Mail call, was the highlight of my deployments.

Thanks for doing this.

As a Viet Nam era veteran I am thrilled to learn about the photo project for the memorial. I've been to it several times and it always moves me to tears. I like the idea of putting faces to the names.

Thanks for the info. Too many

Thanks for the info. Too many people forget the reason we celebrate memorial day. I am glad some people still recognize it!

 My cousin was just deployed.

My cousin was just deployed. It's been tough leaving his wife and son behind, but I know he does it to serve his country.

Memorial Day is a great time for us to remember those who are serving and thank them. And also to remember those who paid the ultimate price for us.

what a great thing to do to

Great Idea

This is a Great Idea!!!  I honor all the Servicemen & women!! What a  sacrifice they make to keep our country safe.  Sending Care Packages is a Great way to return the favor.

Love it!

My husband is in the military and going to deploy soon. I'm so happy that you are reminding people that they can send care packages to loved ones or even to soldiers they don't know. It would be nice to also add in a list of items people can send. I'm actually going to spend a few days on exactly that on my own personal blog. I know that people usually want to send items but don't know what they can send and what they can't. And another important thing to remember: Not all soldiers are men. Don't forget to send female friendly care packages too! =)

This is a great idea!  Having

This Memorial Day is going to

This Memorial Day is going to be tough for our family. My dad served in Korea (he was only eighteen years old at the time, and I was born while he was overseas - I was two years old before he ever laid eyes on me). Sadly, my dad just passed away a week ago. But he had a long and (I hope) happy life, and was proud of his six children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. I think we will spend the day as a family going over some of his war-time pictures. He was lucky enough to drive the jeep that took Marilyn Monroe to her USO show and there are pictures of him with her. He looks so young. :)  It will also be a time to remember all those who have served in our armed forces. God bless them every one!

Great reminder

So true we need reminded of these things sometimes !

Great idea!

I love this post! My dad served in the air force, but I don't know anyone currently serving so I LOVE the idea of anysoldier.com. Thank you so much for letting us know about this!

Wonderful idea!

What a wonderful idea! I was just checking out anysoldier.com and its a great site. I can't afford anything right now but I am going to ask a few of my friends and family to see if we can combine a few dollars each to send something. They sure do deserve it!

Wow!  I had no idea about

Wow!  I had no idea about anysoldier.com.  I have had two cousins serve in the war efforts in Iraq and they are thankfully both home safe now. Thank You so much, I'm heading there now!

My dad served in the Air

My dad served in the Air Force in Korea and I am very proud of his service.    I think that we should all take a few moments on  Memorial Day to reflect and celebrate, our brave servicemen and women and especially those that gave up their lives so that we can be free.

Honoring Our Servicemen and women

These are all great tips.  Thank you for the ideas and links!

About anysoldier.com

I don't personally know someone in the armed services. The idea of anysoldier.com is great! I'm planning on sending a care package to a couple soldiers who don't have family or friends to send them special goodies. I can't imagine how nice it would be for them to open a box and get something nice and read a caring note. Thanks for sharing the site!

What a great idea - sending a

What a great idea - sending a care package to any soldier, if you don't know anyone serving right now, I'll definitely look into this!

Great Post!

My oldest son is in the U.S Army Reserves and fortunately, not overseas yet. I do have a friend who is on leave right now who will be returning to Afghanistan shortly. These men and women really do appreciate anything they recieve through the mail. It's just one way citizens can show our appreciation for what they do for our country.

I would love the opportunity to send hardworking servicemen and women a few care packages through anysoilder.com. I will also pass this link on to family and friends.

Thanks for the link!

what a great idea to put a

what a great idea to put a face to a name!  i have forwarded this article to my friends and family that lost loved ones in the war.  can't wait to take my kids to see the completed project!
