New Tool for Job Seekers: Resume Business Cards

Guest blogger Barbie Tate is a senior account executive at Ketchum, the public relations agency for FedEx Office. From her days as a college peer career counselor to present, she has seen many different approaches to networking. We wanted to share some of Barbie’s experiences with readers who are searching for the big trends in career building.

Calling all professionals and recent grads! Everyone knows that networking is a great way to meet future employers. Most job hunters these days carry business cards with them, but a plain contact card can easily get lost in the shuffle. Along with your sturdy handshake and confident smile, a great way to stand out is by distributing “resume business cards.”

Similar to a traditional business card, this mini-resume contains contact information but also gives a snapshot of your objective, work experience, skills, education – anything a hiring manager might see on a full-size resume. You can pick and choose what details to include depending on your level of experience and the type of job you’re seeking.

Using your complete resume as a reference, pull out the most important information – the things you want that future employer to know about you immediately, whether it is clients you have represented or your professional accomplishments. Always keep in mind that you’re marketing yourself and what you can bring to an organization. After that, it’s all about editing and creativity. Some design elements to consider include:

  • Horizontal or vertical, one side or two

  • Cardstock weight and color

  • Font, color and size/spacing

  • Graphics and finishing (glossy or matte)

Once you have a completed resume business card design, you can print it at home on perforated business card paper or upload the file to Design and Print Center to preview and have your resume-at-a-glance printed by the pros at FedEx Office. If designing from scratch isn’t your forte, you can also use the Design and Print Center to populate a template or use a step-by-step tool to build your card.

Feel free to share other advice in the comments about how you or someone you know has made a great first impression when looking for a job.
