Organization Solutions for a Hectic Summer Schedule

It almost seems counterintuitive but summer at our house requires more attention to a family schedule than any other time of the year. Unlike the school year, where my kids have a fairly consistent routine, summer is a jumble of fun activities like going to the lake, parties, mini vacations and camping. It can be hard to keep track of what is happening from week to week. This year, I thought it would be a great idea to implement a large calendar the whole family could add to and check on a regular basis. Rather than rely on a traditional paper calendar, I wanted something large that we could write on with dry erase markers while still having room for additional notes.

After shopping around for just the right calendar, I realized the best way to get exactly what I wanted was to make my own. Since any glass surface will work with dry erase markers, I grabbed an inexpensive, frameless art display piece. My next challenge was to find the perfect calendar page to fit under the glass. Since I needed something at least 17" x 24", I knew this wasn't something I could just buy in the store or print on my small office printer at home. FedEx Office® was the logical solution for my big printing job. All I had to do was create a simple, blank calendar using a free spreadsheet program from the internet, make sure the dimensions were adjusted to fit my frame and then send my document off to FedEx Office to print on one of their large format printers. My project was printed within minutes and I was able to pick it up at FedEx Office and begin my summer planning almost immediately.

Below is a list of what you’ll need to get started:

·         Any frame that matches your decor

·         Craft glue (6 glue dots)

·         Assorted colored dry erase markers

·         Blank calendar created on your computer and printed document at FedEx Office

After I picked up my printed calendar page, I simply cut away the white space I didn't need, added a few transparent glue dots to the corner of the calendar to adhere it, face up, behind the glass of the glass frame.

It’s that simple. While I often enjoy spending hours on very detailed craft projects, it isn't really necessary all the time. Sometimes you can create something custom and useful for your family in a very short time. Best of all, this project was reasonable in cost. Not bad for a project that will keep my family on track for the busy summer we have planned this year.
