Round-Up: Celebrating Hanukkah

Guest blogger Kimberly Tobey is an organizational development specialist at FedEx Office. She enjoys cooking, running (she completed her first marathon this year!) and spending time with her boyfriend Chris. Today she offers some Hanukkah ideas for our readers. In Kimberly’s family, they celebrate what they call Chrismukkah, a combination of both Christian and Jewish traditions that represent their blended family.

With Hanukkah beginning tonight, I’m looking forward to celebrating these special eight days (also known as the Festival of Lights) with my family and friends. This Hanukkah, I wanted to find some new ways to celebrate and help teach others about what this holiday means. Here are some fun ideas I found online:

Hanukkah Crafts

If you have little ones visiting for the holiday, it can be difficult to keep them occupied for a couple of hours! On DLTK’s craft website, you can learn how to help young children make their own paper menorah. There are helpful step-by-step instructions and you can download templates for the candles and base. Best yet, this craft uses simple materials you can easily find around your home such as paper, scissors and glue. The website also has great tips for making paper dreidels and Hanukkah coloring pages you can print and make copies of for all the kids.

Hanukkah Recipe Cards

I must say, one of the best parts of celebrating Hanukkah is my family’s tradition of making tasty homemade treats. If you’re making some of the traditional Hanukkah dishes such as latkes with applesauce or sufganiyot – so delicious! – create custom recipe cards so you can swap ideas and share your secret ingredients for success.

Using FedEx Office® Design & Print Center, you can browse a variety of templates and design a 4” x 8” flat card with a Hanukkah theme like the one I found above. You could even add another touch of personalization and upload a photo of your finished dish! The 4” x 8” flat holiday cards are only $19.99 for a set of 20 and Design & Print Center orders include free seven-day business shipping, too.

Hanukkah Games
For tweens and teens who are interested in learning more about this holiday, games and puzzles can be a helpful (and fun!) way to share history and traditions. About.com has a selection of printable Hanukkah games for children including a word search, fill in the blank vocabulary sheet, crossword puzzle and more! To help keep all the printouts organized, you could have the games printed and bound at FedEx Office.

However you decide to celebrate this year, I hope you and your loved ones have a happy Hanukkah!
