Round-Up: A Salute to Independence Day!

This is Part Three in our three-part series on celebrating the upcoming Fourth of July holiday in style!

 

With Independence Day coming up this Sunday, I can’t wait to celebrate with family and friends (and enjoy a long weekend, too!). I always look forward to seeing our Fourth of July fireworks, but this year I wanted to find different ways to celebrate the holiday. I thought I’d share some fun and festive ideas I discovered online:

 

Red, White and Blue BBQ – Who doesn’t love a good BBQ?! If you’re planning one for your family and friends, check out the Pocket Change Shopping Blog for helpful tips on throwing the perfect Fourth of July BBQ. They have delicious suggestions for recipes, ideas for decorating (from table centerpieces to hanging paper lanterns), and fun outdoor activities like volleyball or badminton competitions. 

 

Patriotic Crafts & Activities for Kids – If your holiday get-togethers are anything like mine, there are always younger relatives and kids of friends running around the party. All you need are some creative crafts and games to keep them entertained! The Family Education website has great suggestions for Fourth of July projects. With step-by-step instructions for making an “Uncle Sam” doll from a recycled egg carton, quizzes to test their knowledge of history, and a variety of printable games to download, there are plenty of ideas to help kids celebrate Independence Day – and learn, too! Once you’ve downloaded the printable activities, stop by your local FedEx Office center to make plenty of copies, so you don’t run out at the party.

 

Race for the Fourth of July – If you’re a runner like me or just like being outside to enjoy the summer weather, sign up for a local race. The largest 10K in the country that takes place on the Fourth of July is the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, according to the Atlanta Track Club. The race began in the 1970s and has 55,000 participants. Many cities organize races on the morning of Independence Day, so lace up your running shoes and race to show your patriotic pride! I myself plan to run the Dallas Running Club Independence 5K/10K. It’s a smaller race but always fun.

 

Send a Care Package to Troops – As I mentioned in my Memorial Day post, both of my grandfathers served in World War II, so holidays like these have special meaning for my family. Independence Day gives us an opportunity to remember the history of America and honor our troops for their service to this country.
