Small Businesses Think Things Are Looking Up!

Being a former manager of a FedEx Office center, I can tell you that the team members working behind the counters really know small businesses. And not just because our company once was a small business (did you know the first Kinko’s was just one copy machine located on the sidewalk next to a taco stand in California?). No, it’s because small businesses are in our centers each and every day, working with team members to find the solutions that help them build business. And for the last three years we’ve done a nationwide survey of entrepreneurs just like them to see how they’re feeling about things – their business, their customers, the economy and more.
This year, the results told us that things are looking up for small businesses…that they feel poised to help drive the U.S. economy out of its rut. I thought that was great news, and definitely worth spreading the word about!
If you’re interested in a lot of the specifics of the study, definitely take a look at the press release and fact sheet in our FedEx Newsroom. But the point I thought was most helpful to Out of Office readers looking to build business was this: marketing and advertising are the key!
For three years running we’ve heard from small businesses that “marketing and advertising” is the area they’re most likely to increase budget on for the year – and that was true before the recession hit, during and after!
This year we also heard that small businesses believe printed marketing/ advertising tools are effective at driving customers to businesses, and nearly two-thirds of the folks we polled believe traditional marketing/advertising methods are more effective than Web-based counterparts at bringing in customers.
Now clearly we’re a little biased, as FedEx Office is in the business of helping you produce those printed marketing and advertising materials. But if they weren’t effective, small businesses wouldn’t be using them!
I’ve blogged before about how FedEx Office can help market your business, but I hope this survey reminds all our entrepreneurial readers that when it’s time to build business, FedEx Office is here to help. We do it all – from signs and banners to direct mail and flyers. With every project you bring us, our goal is to make you and your business look good on paper!

Things are definitely better than last year.
My small business is definitely doing better than last year. Transactions are up, as well as profits. We have been doing more advertising in both print and online. These combined advertising efforts are increasingly helpful in a down economy when everyone else is cutting back in these areas.
