Take a Holiday Stroll Down Memory Lane with Table Décor

Holidays bring up many special memories from the year and seasons past. I enjoy looking at photos during the holidays to remember those times with family. Unfortunately, with each year that passes the details of the memories seem to fade. This holiday I used old family photos to create photo napkin holders and photo candles as a fun way to share memories and enhance the décor of our holiday dinner table.

When we’re all gathered together, I’ll have each family member share about what they remember from each photo and let others chime in with what they recollect.

Materials

·                   Napkin rings – find these at a linen or home décor store, most craft stores don’t carry these.
·                   3” x 4” candle
·                   Cardstock
·                   Ribbon
·                   Hot glue gun
·                   White craft glue
·                   Photos of each family member attending the party (I used childhood photos)

Instructions

Photo Napkin Holders: Collect the photos of each guest attending the party. When only hard copies are available, you’ll need to scan them so that you have digital versions to work with. Once all photos are in a digital format, use a photo editing tool, such as Adobe® Photoshop or Microsoft® Picture Manager, to crop each digital photo to a 2"x2"square and convert them to black and white. Then insert photos into a word processing file.

Photo Candles: Now select photos of multiple family members for the photo candles. You’ll also resize the photos to 2.5" x 2.5" square and convert them to black and white. Print the files at FedEx Office® on standard paper with a matte laminate for a sturdy, non-shiny finish. You’ll also be able to use a cloth and water to wipe away any messy fingerprints with the matte laminate.

While at FedEx Office, cut out the 2" x 2"laminated napkin photos and the 2.5" x 2.5"candle photos. You’ll also cut the cardstock into 2.25" and 2.75" squares, which will be a border for the photos. It’s helpful to have a team member to show you how to align the paper on the cutting board to avoid crooked edges or have them cut them behind the counter for you.

Now that the pictures and cardstock are cut to size you’ll glue the photos to the center of the trimmed cardstock with craft glue. Finally, use the hot glue gun to glue the cardstock backing to the napkin ring holder. Don’t forget to allow a few hours for drying. Tip: You can get as creative as you like with napkin holders by adding beads, glitter or holly to match your table décor.

To finish the photo candles, cut the ribbon to the size needed to wrap around the candle. Secure it in place with a dot of hot glue. Then, use the hot glue gun to paste the cardstock-backed family photo to the candle. Tip: Glue the photo over the seam where you’ve attached the ribbon to the candle for a perfectly finished look.
