Taking Note: Custom Notepad How-To

Video:
By now, most of you have probably realized that I really enjoy creating personalized things for myself and others (see my previous posts on personalized sticky notes, custom banners and branded pens). One reason for this is that it’s nice to know that no one will have the same thing that I do. An added bonus is that it’s fun to see my designs turn out just the way I envisioned.
With that in mind, I’ve got another fun personalized idea to share – custom notepads! It’s easy to create a notepad of just about any size with a little help from your local FedEx Office® center and their special machines that create tear-sheet notepads on-site. You can even use different types of paper –abandoned/out-of-date print-outs from work, scrapbooking leftovers, colored cardstock or a custom design that you have printed and cut.
The first step is figuring out exactly how you’ll use your notepad. Is it for general notes and to-do lists? Or for something more specific like a babysitters’ checklist, birthday present or holiday gift for co-workers or clients.
Once you’ve narrowed down how you plan to use your custom notepad, you should have a better idea of the size and type of layout you want to use. I wanted something fun but with plenty of room to write and no lines so I could make the most of the space – so I decided to make quick template using Microsoft Word®. I added my name and a border and created my template so that the page could be cut in half horizontally to produce two notepad sheets for each piece of paper that I print.
I took my design to FedEx Office, where I printed 25 copies and had the sheets cut in half to give me 50 total notepad pages.
Then, I purchased some brightly-colored, blank cardstock to cut and insert throughout the notepad to add a little character and thickness.
Finally, I had the FedEx Office crew seal all the pages together on top and, voila, I had a professionally bound, custom notepad!
Before the holidays, I plan to make several more notepads as stocking stuffers and small gifts for family and friends (and maybe even for my fellow Out of Office bloggers). Do you have any creative ideas for the upcoming holiday season? If so, share them in the comments below.
