Create a “Dinner Party in a Box” for easy entertaining at home

It’s the New Year and I couldn’t be more excited. 2013 will be a year full of successes, trying new things and most importantly, spending time with family and friends. I don’t know about you, but I often struggle to balance my career with my social life, and try to squeeze in time in with the people who are most important to me. Well not this year! My resolution is to entertain at home more often in order to spend more quality time with my loved ones. The best way for me to do this is to plan ahead for an easy night in. For some people, hosting comes naturally. Others, like me, need a little help. Now, when I want to have people over, I can just grab this box and sift through the contents to get the party planning juices flowing. Think of this as a dinner party preparedness kit.

Here’s how I created a “dinner party in a box.”

  1. Grab an old shoe box or a box you have stored in a closet somewhere. Wrap it, including the lid, with colorful or festive paper. Really make it your own!

Make Healthy Food Choices and Stay on Track with a Meal Planner

About eight months ago I made a radical diet change to improve my overall health and help me lose 10 pesky pounds I had been carrying around for a while. The eating plan was simple: no refined flour or sugar, no dairy, and lots of lean protein, veggies and complex carbohydrates, like sweet potatoes. That paired with a gym routine of three to four 60-minute workouts per week and I quickly dropped the excess weight (I actually ended up losing 16 pounds!) and felt better than I had in years.

The holidays, though, threw me off track. The office was loaded with sweet treats, popcorn tins and candy. I am a sucker for sugar.

Determined to get back into my healthy eating habits, I created this laminated meal planner for my refrigerator door. On it, I can list what I’ll have for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for the entire week. I can even include items for my grocery list, which really makes shopping once a week a lot easier.

Here are the steps to create this custom meal planner:

Do you set goals in your business, for your family, or for personal accomplishments? Goals are a great way to move forward, provided you have supported the planning process with a specific action list, broken down into individual steps. An action planner is a great way to do this.

A good action plan will help you create SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-based) goals that can be broken down into bite-sized action items you can knock off one-by-one. Wreaths to Make Your Neighbors Green with Envy

Oh Baby! Creating the Perfect Baby Memory Book

Looking for a unique way to capture all the special moments from baby's first years? As a first-time parent, I’m eager to record all the details of baby’s days, so I decided to make a template for a baby book to document the big moments. With a template, I can fill in activities or events as they occur (and it lets me catch up more easily if I get busy – imagine that! – and fall behind). ...read more

Taking Note: Custom Notepad How-To

By now, most of you have probably realized that I really enjoy creating personalized things for myself and others (see my previous posts on personalized sticky notes, custom banners and branded pens). One reason for this is that it’s nice to know that no one will have the same thing that I do. An added bonus is that it’s fun to see my designs turn out just the way I envisioned. ...read more

Grocery Shopping Game-Changer: Using a Template Grocery List

One of my most-dreaded household tasks (besides cleaning bathrooms, of course) is the weekly trip to the grocery store. It feels like it takes forever to plan the meals and prepare the list. Then I inevitably forget at least one item that we needed and find myself headed back to the store in just a few short days. Sigh.

A great solution to this weekly challenge is to create a shopping list template for your weekly trips to the store. Because it will contain all the items you frequently purchase at the grocery store (or, for that matter, any store that you regularly visit), you can use it as the starting point for your list every time you shop.

You can either make your own template of frequently purchased items (and for the super-organized among us, you could arrange the list by the layout of the store you prefer) or check out these handy downloadable templates online. I liked these:
