Think Outside the Lunch Box: Tips for Making Healthy and Easy Office Lunches

It’s that time of the day. The time when you wander over to the office refrigerator to extract a bland-looking plastic container with an even more bland turkey sandwich trapped inside. To make matters worse, it’s Friday and you have had the same turkey sandwich every day this week. The temptation of chain-food restaurants lingers outside your office door, making it even harder to stick to a budget or diet plan. With our New Year’s resolutions in mind, I’ve got some helpful tips below to get you away from that burrito place down the street and back into saving money and eating right!

·         Make a plan. Having a list of meal ideas ready to go can make your trip to the supermarket an easier experience. It also lets you prepare dishes for lunch that can also be reused throughout the week. All this takes is a few minutes of prep before hitting the store to get your thoughts together and will make eating healthy a priority for the rest of the week.

·         Mix and match! Check out our food template here, which lets you list your favorite foods on the sides of the table in order to create a new meal idea each day. Each side is labeled with either a protein or a vegetable. After scanning the list of possibilities, check the box for the foods you would like to include. This ensures you get a healthy serving of a protein and fruit or vegetable in your lunch, helping you stay full until dinner time. If you want to make the chart a bit more durable for those weekly shopping trips, consider getting it laminated. That way you can use a dry erase marker and reuse the table week after week – just simply erase last week’s markings!

·         Get outside. One of the many reasons I want to go out to eat during my lunch break is because it gets me out of the office for a little bit. After staring at a computer all morning, the last thing I want to do is eat lunch at my desk. Taking a walk during your lunch break gets you that fresh air and some exercise – no food required! Better yet, a quick break like this can make for a more productive and healthy work day.

What tips do you have to keep your office lunch from getting “stale”? What’s your favorite thing to bring for lunch?
