Valentine’s Day Series: Crafty Cards Made Easy

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and I’m sure all of our Out of Office readers are getting ready for the big day. Whether you’re picking out a thoughtful gift for that special someone or helping kids assemble Valentines for their classmates, February 14th will be here before we know it.

It seems like for every holiday, I have grand designs of creating elaborate, handmade cards for my family and friends. But the occasion always sneaks up on me and I don’t end up sending anything. This year, I have the same good intentions, but I came up with a solution to help me actually get the cards into the mailbox.

Instead of individually making cards, I decided to create a digital template. This way, I can focus on one design and quickly print all the cards at the same time. I’ve shared my template here, but you can also find lots of good ideas on the FedEx Office Design & Print Center website. If you’re feeling really creative, you can follow the steps below to create your own card:

Step One: Determine the dimensions and orientation of your card
I created my template to fit two cards onto a standard 8.5”x11” sheet of paper. I included a dashed line through the middle of the page to indicate where to cut the two cards apart.

Step Two: Select colors and design elements
I wanted my card to be bright and cheerful, so I selected vibrant colors and patterns. Microsoft® Word has a lot of shape options (select the “Insert” tab) which you can then design with various colors and backgrounds (select the “Format” tab, which appears after you’ve inserted a shape).

Step Three: Add text
Once you’ve determined the layout and style of your card, you can add a message. Microsoft Word makes this easy with text boxes (select the “Insert” tab) which you can position anywhere on the page. You can even format the background of the text box to be the same as your other design elements (from the “Format” tab select “Shape Fill” and then “No Fill”).

Step Four: Print your card
You can buy heavy cardstock in a variety of colors and print and cut your cards at home. Or, upload the design to FedEx Office® Print Online. Here you can select paper type and finishing options, and even have your cards cut so they’re ready to mail out.

I’ve got just a few more envelopes to address and then I’ll be ready to send my cards.  Good luck with your own designs and happy Valentine’s Day!
