Summer Canning: Creating Customized Labels for Jars

By now, summer canning season is in full swing! I’m not a canner myself, but my grandparents were great gardeners and their fridge, freezer and cabinets were endlessly stocked with canned goods. When I think about their house, I remember seeing shelves and shelves of Ball jars loaded all year-round with fruits and vegetables from their summer garden. The green beans were one of my favorites!

With the trend towards locally grown and homemade goods, I know some of our readers may be canning things this summer. To keep all those yummy fruits and vegetables straight, you probably need labels for your jars.

History in the Making

Guest blogger Kayt Schaefer is a manager of program implementation with FedEx Office and has worked with the company for 16 years. Kayt and her husband are dedicated supporters of their local major league soccer team. In her spare time, Kayt also enjoys fly-fishing and, of course, researching her family history.


I was about seven years old when my Mom’s father passed away. As my Mom sorted through his belongings, she found boxes of family photos – many from the 1800s – and this set her on a 30-year journey to research our family history, ultimately publishing a book detailing our family history.

Each summer, I traveled with her as she conducted genealogical research. She interviewed family members and we spent endless hours together in libraries pouring over books and microfilm, in court houses rummaging through birth, marriage, census and estate records, as well as hiking through fields and up hills to transcribe cemetery data.

Our Out of Office blog has been around for about a year and a half now – time really flies! But in all that time (and all those posts!) we realize that we’ve never really gotten the chance to sit down and tell our readers a little more about ourselves.     SO BIG!

    Everyone who sees my son does not believe he is 3 years old. In fact, for a year people have been telling me he is the size of a 5 year old! The doctor has placed him in the 99th percentile for height since he was 6 months old – and I wanted to keep track of my little beanpole!  I created a growth chart to measure his progress, but the paper one I received at his baby shower just wasn’t cutting it. I wanted to design something more durable and unique, something just for him.

    I used Adobe® Illustrator to design my chart. I wanted to create something that he could use as he gets a bit older and his tastes change (for example his walls are now BRIGHT superhero red – a color he picked himself!)  I used many bright colors and bold shapes. (Tip: the ruler tool was very helpful in making an accurate scale.)
