Do-It-Yourself Wedding Favors: Wine Charms

A few years ago I made wine charms as wedding favors for my friend to give to guests on her special day. Guests were really excited to take home a gift they could use all year around. They are a simple, DIY project that adds a personal touch to a wedding or dinner party. Just follow these easy steps for making the wine charms.

Supply List (per charm):

·         1 inch silver or gold ring with clasp

·         1 charm

·         12-14 small beads

·         Ribbon - 1/8” wide (3mm)

·         Hole punch - 1/8”

·         White heavy paper stock for Card #1

·         Heavy paper stock in print/solid color for Card #2

·         Glue stick or tacky glue

·         Jewelry flat nose pliers

·         Pencil

·         Ruler

Tip: Visit your local craft store, bead shop or gem fair to get the beads and charms. You’ll find a large selection of charms and the option to purchase in bulk at these places. Personalize the wedding charms by using a charm that is special to the couple. There are so many fun charms to choose from, including sea shells, horses, ballerinas, food, letters, etc. If you can think of it, it’s most likely available!

Step 1 – The Charms

1.       Create a pattern for the beads and charm before placing on the ring. (For example, three blue beads, three gold beads, the charm, three gold beads, three blue beads.) This way you always know exactly what should be on the ring and in what order.

2.       Insert the beads and charm on the ring

3.       Crimp the end of the ring to a 90-degree vertical angle with the jewelry flat nose pliers to hold the beads and charm in place.

Step 2 – The Cards

1.       Design artwork for the flat card/Card #1 (pictured in white with monogram). The final size for each will be 4” x 2”. I used a word processing program to design the cards. You can use my template or make your own.

2.       Print the card on a white heavy card stock. I sent my artwork to FedEx Office through their online printing service. I selected white heavy stock paper among the paper options.

3.       Cut Card #1 to 4” x 2”.

4.       Next, trim the heavy paper stock in your print/solid color (Card #2) to 4.5” x 4.25”.

Tip: You can have a team member at FedEx Office cut cards behind the counter. While you might not need this if the favors are for a small party, it might be a very useful service when you’re making hundreds of favors for a wedding. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to re-print the cards after I cut them crooked!

5.       Measure 1/4" from the right side of the card and 1/4" from the top of the card, mark this spot with a pencil. Then, measure 3/4" to the left of that spot and mark this new spot with a pencil. These spots will be where you punch the holes to thread the ribbon. Now drill or punch two 1/8” holes in Card #1. Remember, if you’re making a lot of these, the team members at FedEx Office can also drill holes with their drill machine after they cut the cards.

6.       Fold Card #2 in half to a final size 2.25” by 4.25” inches.

7.       Cut the ribbon into 1.75” pieces.

Step 3 – Let’s Assemble

Invite bridesmaids or friends over for a crafting day to put the favors together. It’s a great chance for the girls to get know each other and bond before the big day.

1.       Thread the ribbon through the holes on Card #1 and then glue to the back side of that same card allowing for some movement for the ribbon. You don’t want it too tight.

2.       Glue Card #1 to Card #2. Be sure to center the card with 1/8” on all sides.

3.       Hook the wine charm on the ribbon.
