Fundraising Series: New Ideas for Reaching a Fundraising Goal

This week, we’re sharing some ideas for raising awareness and raising funds – some are new and novel, others are updates to the tried-and-true. One fundraising challenge many organizations struggle with is how to spread the word and get people excited to give. Last year, I participated in a unique event – a swim-a-thon – to raise funds to keep the lights on and water warm at the local swimming pool. It was a great event and we met our goal, but there were not as many participants as we had hoped. So what could we have done better?

Leah shared an idea about using signs to help your cause, but here’s a twist on that – door hangers! These are a creative and visible way to get the word out quickly about your fundraising event.

They are easy to make on your own or using a template, which we’ve got for you here

1.       Set up a document in Microsoft® Word that is 3.5” x 8”. Allow for a 1-inch hole at the top of the page. Or, use our template or create your own design in this space using photos and information about the charity and event. If the fundraiser is for a youth group, you could get the kids involved in the design.

2.       Take your door hangers design to a FedEx Office and a team member will help you with bringing your idea to life. I actually printed mine using Print Online. Since I had designed the file on my computer, it was easy enough to send them to print online and then pick them up in a center on my way home from work one day.

3.       If you aren’t short on time, you could punch a hole in the top of the hanger and thread ribbon or twine through it to tie them up with a bow. Then, all that’s left is distributing the hangers!

You can put these door hangers on the doors of family and friends. Office doors count too; just be sure to check that it’s something your building or company allow.
