Memory Game

Winter is raging on with no end in sight. The temperatures have been particularly low lately making bundling up to go outside a chore. As I mentioned in my last post, my son has really been enjoying playing board games.

For Christmas he got numerous games and puzzles from his grandparents and aunties. He especially enjoys playing his SpongeBob SquarePants™ Memory Game. Since he also loves playing with flashcards I decided to combine the two concepts and make a fun and educational memory game with my own personal touches. (By the way, our blogger Katie did a great post on flashcards for her daughter last year. This game is a little different, but the concept is similar.)

This memory or concentration game can be adapted for kids of all ages. You can begin with simple concepts such as shapes, numbers, letters, and colors and advance to more complex ideas involving math, grammar, or other languages. My son is very good at identifying colors so I decided to design a game intended to help him recognize the words for the colors.

How to Make the Game:

  • To start, check out the template I made for the game here. Whether you use the template or make it from scratch yourself, cut card stock into large star and moon shapes.

  • If you opt to make the game without the template, take your star and moon shaped pieces and grab a few colored markers. On the moon shaped pieces, color in a square block in the center. Using the same marker, write the word for that color on a star shaped piece. Now you should have a moon and star pair for each color.

  • Finally, I laminated the shapes and cut them out. Laminating the game pieces is a good way to add durability and biting resistance (just make sure to trim any sharp edges with your scissors or a corner rounder common with scrapbookers).

Hope this helps you occupy your little ones during those long, snowy days!
