Summertime Photos Taken to the Next Level

As a graduate student in art school, I was surrounded by talented graphic artists. While I was studying advertising and not design, I have always had an interest in art. Even though my skills are limited, I still like to think of myself as a creative individual. Lately I have been trying to use my artistic side to reinvent the artwork on my walls at home. We recently reorganized our furniture and I was thinking of a way to spruce up the walls, rather than continuing to look at the few random things I have accumulated at garage sales in years past.
I decided to take some photos from our latest family trip to the zoo and turn them into art. I could have simply taken the photographs and framed them, but I wanted to try something more unique and interesting. The pictures you use could be any photos you have taken, such as from a family vacation or seasonal landscape that is significant to you personally. I opened the pictures in Adobe Photoshop – but any photo editing program should allow for artistic expression. Even simple photo editing programs will let you adjust the lighting and colors until you get the desired effect.
I tried out a variety of different filters on my photographs until I found one I liked. The one I chose gives the photos an abstract feeling. The filter is called “glowing edges” and adds a neon multi-colored hue to the images. You can make slight changes to create a subtle image that looks like a painting or drawing; or you can alter the photos drastically as I did so that it may not even be recognizable as a photograph. There are so many options to choose from so you can turn your photos into anything from charcoal paintings, colored pencil drawings, to mosaic tiles. With photo-editing technology, the possibilities are seemingly endless and it is simple to create meaningful masterpieces for your home.
Once you have your photographs finished, you can print them as small or big as you want to frame them or create a poster – or even a canvas print! It’s a fun way to take your memories and turn them into art that you can enjoy every day, rather than when you find time to flip open the photo album!
