Round-Up: Give Your Cube a Makeover!

Is it just me or are you tired of looking at the same old stuff on your cube (or office) walls??? The only thing I’ve changed in my work space in the past six months is my wall calendar. And while I love the picture of my sweet dog Oreo, it has to be at least five years old. Sad, I know. So, I think it’s time to give my cube a makeover. I found the following resources on how to jazz up your cube. Check them out and let me know what you think.

  • There are many photo databases out on the Web and the best part is many can be printed for your personal, non-commercial use. Add in a few inexpensive frames and your cube is well on its way to a total make-over! Try searching for images on your favorite search engine. Just be sure to read the terms of use.

Name That Baby!

At my work, the “pregnancy bug” seems to be going around. Whether it’s their first or second child (or their sixth in some cases!), expecting mothers agree having a baby is an exciting time. All the planning and preparation can be overwhelming, especially when added to the unbalanced hormones. Baby showers are a welcomed escape because you get to leave the planning to someone else! Many women have multiple showers thrown for them by family, friends, and co-workers.

A few years ago I threw a baby shower for a close friend of mine and I wanted every detail to be perfect. When it came time for celebrating my own pregnancy, I could truly appreciate all the time, love, and effort that go into planning such an event.

Round-Up: Tips for a New Job

Reports about the economy seem to be taking a bit of a turn for the better lately, and it appears that companies are even beginning to hire again in some sectors. Many Out of Office readers may be on the job hunt now, or kick-starting time with a new organization or position. No doubt, starting a new job can often feel exciting and a little nerve-wracking too, because it takes time to learn the ropes with your team and organization. I can definitely relate to this having just started my current role with FedEx Office a few months ago. Being the new kid on the block, I wanted to share some tips and advice I’ve come across online that could be helpful for those of you starting a new job soon.

  • Learn how your team communicates – Workplace columnist Anita Bruzzese, points out in her blog 45 Things, that some teams may prefer face-to-face communication over receiving numerous e-mails, or vice versa. Figure out what’s working on your team and make it work for you.

Teaching Gratitude with Hugs and Ladybugs

Guest Blogger Michelle Kelley is a marketing specialist advisor at FedEx Services and has been with the company for almost eight years. She lives in the Seattle area with her husband and two daughters and loves to plan parties down to the very last detail.

When planning my daughter Anna's first birthday party, I searched for ways to make her party special. More than that, ways to make her guests feel special. See, it doesn't end with great invitations and a fun theme. Once the party is over, we try to always say thanks for the gifts that people have given. Remember that expression, "It's not over until the fat lady sings”? Well at our house, it's not over until the thank-you notes have been sent! ...read more

Wedding Series – A Parting Gift (tag)

I want to share one last idea before my wedding. For my ceremony, I decided to give little bells as our wedding favor, partly to pay homage to my last name one last time and also because I love the sweet, cheerful sound they make.

I put them in baskets for my nephew to hand out to our guests just before my new husband and I get ready to say goodbye and hop in the vintage car we’ve rented. They’re small silver bells and I’ve made little tags to tie on each of them that say “Ring this bell for a fond farewell” on one side and “thank you for being part of our special day” on the other side.” After our guests send us off, they can keep the bell as a reminder of the day.

Here’s how I made the tags: ...read more

Shower Invitations Bathed in Style

Have you ever hosted a baby shower for a friend or relative? I remember how much I enjoyed my own, and I’ve had my fair share of opportunities to help organize these special occasions, too. My favorite part is designing the invitations. I love to personalize the invites and find unique ways to tie the theme of the party to the style of the invitations. It’s easier than you might think!

You can create your own design with programs like Microsoft Publisher or Adobe Photoshop Elements and use colorful borders, patterns and adorable clip art that match the theme of the shower. Shower themes can range from pastel-inspired parties to spa showers or tea parties. Whatever theme you decide on, don’t forget to weave that style into the decorations and invitations to create a consistent look throughout the party. There’s nothing more confusing than getting an elegant, formal event invitation, but you show up and it’s a very casual, informal affair!  ...read more

Wedding Series: Cutting Out a Fun Photo-Op

Guest Blogger Emily Sommers is a design professional living in the Dallas-area. She loves reading and sewing and recently opened a shop on Etsy under the name Lily June.

In August 2008 my husband and I were engaged, and in November 2009 we were married. We had 15 months to do the research for the wedding, make the decisions, and second guess those decisions. Early in the process I came across a couple who had created a life-size cut-out of themselves for their guests to take photos with. Chris and I decided we must have one. It turned out wonderfully and is one of the decisions I’m glad we stuck with.  ...read more

Keep Co-workers Cohesive with
Perfectly Planned Potlucks

My team at work is a little food obsessed. Okay, truthfully, we’re a LOT food obsessed. We start talking about lunch around 9:30 in the morning. So when it comes to team builders, we find there is nothing better than a potluck. A little time with colleagues with good food and good conversation can really build team unity.

There is not much to planning the perfect potluck but there are some key things you can do to make them effortless.

  1. Plan at least a couple of weeks ahead so you can make sure everyone is available.
  2. Always use a sign-up sheet so people can volunteer to bring a particular item versus being assigned a dish. Check out the one I use in the Templates & Tools section.

  • This is important so you can be sure to get a good mix of sides, main dishes, and desserts. And you don’t end up with three dishes of green bean casserole!
