Family Fun for Valentine’s Day

My husband and I have never been big fans of Valentine’s Day…it seems like the restaurants are always crowded and everything is over-priced. But now that we have a two-year-old, I want him to appreciate the general meaning and sentiment behind the holiday. And, it is a nice reminder that we all need to stop every now and then to say how much we care about each other! So I’m thinking of hosting a Valentine’s theme play date at my house this year for Tate’s friends and their moms.
If you want to host your own family celebration, here are some of my top ideas to make your home look fun and festive with some Valentine’s Day decor.
- Create confetti for decorating the dining table or buffet with a paper shredder. All you need is some red and pink colored paper, and if you don’t have a cross-cut or confetti-cut paper shredder, just grab a bunch of the paper shreds and cut them into smaller pieces with scissors.
- Buy red-colored ribbon, tulle and/or raffia from your local craft or fabric store, and tie them into bows around large objects throughout the house like potted plants, dining room chairs, stair banisters, etc.
- Get the kids involved in decorating by creating a banner with a Valentine’s Day message and pictures. Buy a roll of butcher paper and bust out the washable paints – or if your kids are a little older let them design something on the computer and have it printed out at the local FedEx Office.
- Last but not least, one of my absolute favorite ideas. Until Wednesday Calls has instructions on making a beautiful Valentine’s Day photo garland. If I’m able to find the time to make this with Tate, I don’t know if I’ll ever take it down!
