New Year’s Resolution Series: Stay Positive with Health Journals

If you’re like a lot of people I know (including fellow Out of Office blogger Leah), you definitely gave some consideration to improving your wellness in the New Year. Maybe it was to find time to meditate, have better posture, lose a few pounds or try yoga. Unfortunately – at least in my experience – many of these undertakings seem overwhelming and too often people give up shortly after starting.
For me, there is one piece of advice that I always try to remember when creating a routine such as an ambitious new workout regimen: always take it one day at a time. With this in mind, I’ve found a really helpful way to keep myself focused on my wellness goals – a health journal.
There are lots of ways to create a journal that will monitor your daily activities in a way that is convenient for your lifestyle and that will lessen the stress of meeting your goals.
· If you’re busy, you might try logging your activities on a smart phone. You’ll have constant access to your information and able to enter – from wherever you are – the day’s food intake, water consumption and exercise statistics. If you’d rather not rely on technology, purchase a small notepad that can be kept in your back pocket or a handbag.
· If you’re detail-oriented, you can print a number of daily or weekly food and exercise tracker templates, like the ones found on FitSugar. Place into a binder or have them bound into a book to ensure all of your updates stay in one place.
· If you like seeing the big picture, you can print an oversize calendar for the week, laminate it and use a dry-erase marker to capture your progress. Hang it in an area of the house that you find inspiring (or want to avoid, such as the kitchen!). The best part about this one is that you can start each new week with a clean slate, both figuratively and literally.
You can track anything you want – minutes a day for meditation or other reflective time, ounces of water consumed, weekly weight check-in – it’s all up to you and what you want to accomplish. Just remember to take your new goals one day at a time!
