History in the Making

Guest blogger Kayt Schaefer is a manager of program implementation with FedEx Office and has worked with the company for 16 years. Kayt and her husband are dedicated supporters of their local major league soccer team. In her spare time, Kayt also enjoys fly-fishing and, of course, researching her family history.

I was about seven years old when my Mom’s father passed away. As my Mom sorted through his belongings, she found boxes of family photos – many from the 1800s – and this set her on a 30-year journey to research our family history, ultimately publishing a book detailing our family history.

Each summer, I traveled with her as she conducted genealogical research. She interviewed family members and we spent endless hours together in libraries pouring over books and microfilm, in court houses rummaging through birth, marriage, census and estate records, as well as hiking through fields and up hills to transcribe cemetery data.

A “Sweet” Baby Shower Game

Guest blogger Katie Nasche is a communications advisor for FedEx Office. Katie is a busy mom of two girls, and in her spare time, she enjoys baking and scrapbooking. Today, Katie shares with us a fun idea for a baby shower game.

I recently co-hosted a baby shower for a friend, and we played a fun and funny game I wanted to share. It was a spin on the children’s memory game where players take turns choosing two cards looking for a match.

We used a large piece of poster board as our game board instead of making baby-themed cards that players turn over. We then numbered a stack of sticky notes from 1-34 (you can do more or less for as many matches as you want). We put the sticky notes in neat rows along the game board, and behind each one we wrote a pregnancy or baby-related word like “Baby Girl” or “Epidural.” Remember – each word has to appear twice on the game board, so you’ll need half as many words as you have sticky notes.

Holiday Gift Shipping Tips from a Pro

Guest blogger Cordell Golden has more than 18 years of experience working for FedEx. He spends his days during the busy holiday season assisting customers with their shipping challenges and sharing his tips on perfect packing & shipping techniques.

I’ve done a lot of packing and shipping in the time I’ve been with FedEx. And call me biased, but I think it’s one of the things we do best! I’ve seen it all, too. From toys and care packages to fragile and oddly shaped items…you name it, we’ve probably packed and shipped it. This holiday season, I’m sharing some of my best packing tips with you, our readers. I’ll let you in on some of the tips and tricks from the pros so you can make sure your holiday packages arrive intact and on time.

    Christmas Memories Exchange

Guest blogger Katie Nasche is a communications advisor for FedEx Office. Katie is a busy mom of two girls, and in her spare time, she enjoys baking and scrapbooking. Today, Katie shares with us some fun ideas for a holiday-themed scrapbook.

Last year, my family began a fun tradition of exchanging Christmas memories. It came about because we transitioned from purchasing gifts for each other individually to a white elephant exchange. I didn’t want to lose the sentiment that came with choosing just the right gift for each of my family and friends.

    Round-Up: Celebrating Hanukkah

Guest blogger Kimberly Tobey is an organizational development specialist at FedEx Office. She enjoys cooking, running (she completed her first marathon this year!) and spending time with her boyfriend Chris. Today she offers some Hanukkah ideas for our readers. In Kimberly’s family, they celebrate what they call Chrismukkah, a combination of both Christian and Jewish traditions that represent their blended family.

With Hanukkah beginning tonight, I’m looking forward to celebrating these special eight days (also known as the Festival of Lights) with my family and friends. This Hanukkah, I wanted to find some new ways to celebrate and help teach others about what this holiday means. Here are some fun ideas I found online:

    Learning in a Flash

Guest blogger Katie Nasche is a communications advisor for FedEx Office. Katie is a busy mom of two girls, and in her spare time, she enjoys baking and scrapbooking. Today, Katie shares with us some fun ideas for flashcards.

Now that my daughter is a first grader, school is serious business. She has spelling and reading tests and math problems. To help her learn, I decided to go with the tried and true method of flashcards.

There are some great websites with templates that make it easy to do your own. I like the free template from www.kitzkikz.com/flashcards because it’s double-sided, so you can put an addition problem on the front and the answer on the back.

Spicing Things up in the Kitchen

Guest Blogger Stephanie Buttrill is a vice president at Ketchum, the public relations agency for FedEx Office. Like many New Yorkers, Stephanie is a long-term apartment dweller. With such limited space – and very few cabinets – organization is a must!

My husband and I bought our first apartment together almost three years ago. We were young(er) and starry eyed about the whole thing – like many young couples are when diving into the real estate market. Looking back on it now, there are so many things we didn’t notice about the home we settled into that make us batty now. Most of these happen to be in the kitchen…

    T
ake, for example, the fact that none of our kitchen cabinet doors match.

Keeping Kids Busy in the Car

Guest blogger Marelenise Roberts is an educator in Dallas, and the wife of one of our FedEx Office team members. She made some terrific car travel books this summer that we just had to share with our readers!

For this year’s family car trip, we upgraded from the traditional “I Spy” game.

This summer, our family drove from our home in North Texas to Disney World in Florida. It was almost a 20-hour drive with three kids in tow! Needless to say, I was worried about how we’d keep all three kids occupied in the car and avoid boredom.

I captured their enthusiasm for the trip and for Disney by making them themed activity booklets for the car. I bought simple pocket folders with brads and filled them to the brim with all kinds of fun games. You could also have these coil-bound or secured like book. Then, I laminated the folders and decorated them with each child’s nickname.  ...read more
