Get Noticed: Making Resumes Pop

While some people are enjoying the lazy days of summer poolside (how I wish I was one of them!), many others are hitting the pavement looking to find the perfect job. But with the large pool of recent college grads plus seasoned professionals looking to make the next big leap in their careers, how do you get noticed among all the prospects?

Obviously you want to put your best foot forward and highlight your skills and experience in a concise and eye-catching way. But what about some out-of-the-box ideas to help take your resume from plain to perfection?

If you have graphic design skills, or a good friend with those abilities, put them to good use to jazz up your resume. It’s probably best not to go too crazy with design, unless you’re seeking a job in a highly creative field, but a small touch here and there may be just enough to stand out.

Small Business Ownership: The Second Hardest Job in the World

They say being a parent is the hardest job in the world. I believe it, but I think one of the next hardest jobs has to be that of a small business owner. They’re similar in a lot of ways: you had an idea, nurtured it into creation and now you’re putting all your time and energy into making it a success.   ...read more

Creating Memorable Holiday Greeting Cards for Your Small Business

I am always looking for new ways to show my clients, colleagues and important contacts that I appreciate them, especially around the holidays. Holiday greeting cards are ideal for small business owners because they are easy to create, inexpensive to send, and can be a great way to solidify your brand. And FedEx Office® provides everything you need to create the perfect holiday greeting card.

To me, the more memorable the greeting card, the better. And you can get more creative than you may think! You can use a memorable design, include something fun inside the card, and even send it during an off time so it doesn't get lost in the traditional Christmas card blitz.

This year, I decided to send out Thanksgiving greeting cards with a unique insert. Since my business is the Small Business Bonfire, and we've done promotions with s'mores in the past, a greeting card with a recipe for S'mores Pie at Thanksgiving time (the season of pies!) was the perfect combination.

Postcards Aren’t Just for Tourists!

As kids are gearing up to go back to school with the lazy days of summer coming to an end, there’s no better time to get back to business. For small businesses, a great way to reach customers is to create marketing materials such as postcards that make your business stand out from the crowd.  ...read more

Take Steps to Promote Your Business with Floor Signs

Let’s say your small business is a resort offering picturesque sunset cruises to vacationing tourists. Undoubtedly other local resorts offer similar excursions and comparable marketing (e.g., flyers, business cards, brochures, website, etc.) as you do. So how can you make sure visitors know your cruise is the one to choose for beautiful panoramas and instant memories?

One way is to grab the attention of guests of your resort or other tourists with floor signs. These can be placed on indoor surfaces such as hotel rooms, the entryway to your resort or at the baggage claim at the airport. Here are easy steps (no pun intended!) to creating floor signs.

Making Your Yard Sale a Money-Maker!

Guest Blogger Stephanie Buttrill is an account supervisor at Ketchum, the public relations agency for FedEx Office. Like many New Yorkers, Stephanie is long-term apartment dweller, but she said she just had to share some tips for a springtime passion developed growing up in the suburbs of Chicago – garage sales!

It’s springtime, and to me that means just one thing – garage sale season! Walking through yard sales in my parents’ neighborhood and nearby suburban subdivisions was as common a weekend activity growing up as trips to the town pool or library. For me, every stop along a garage-sale route was like an adventure trying to find something extraordinary amidst piles of the merely ordinary (or worse!) items being discarded by their once-proud owners.  ...read more
